  • BI Terminology
    A schematic picture of BI is provided in the following figure:
    Data Warehouse Designer (DWD). The application that allows viewing and modification of metadata that describes and builds the data warehouse.
    Data Warehouse Designer Scheduler (DWD Scheduler). The component of the DWD responsible for loading data. The DWD Scheduler schedules and runs jobs to extract data from remote ERP systems to build the data warehouse.
    DWD/Scheduler. In this document, DWD/Scheduler is used to refer to all the technical components composing the DWD and the DWD Scheduler.
    QAD BI Collaborative Portal (Client-Side Browser). This is the remote client-side user interface to QAD BI. It is a flash-based interface run on a remote Internet browser and provides for interactive dashboards, reports, collaboration, and administration.
    QAD BI Portal Server (Server-Side Webapp). This is the server-side component of the QAD BI Portal. It is a java-based Web application (webapp), which receives requests from the client-side BI Portal. The webapp communicates requests as queries to SQL Server and coordinates the reply to the client-side browser.
    Single Tier. Single-tier deployment refers to the fact that all the primary QAD BI components —DWD/Scheduler, BI Portal (Webapp), and SQL-Server—are deployed on one single server machine. In this deployment model and all other deployment models, it is preferred and recommended that the BI data warehouse itself is placed on a separate SAN/NAS device.
    Two Tier. Two-tier deployment refers to having the QAD BI Portal (server-side webapp) on a separate machine (server) from the DWD/Scheduler and SQL Server. The DWD/Scheduler and SQL-Server remain on the primary server machine.
