  • Reference: Network Sizing Details
Bandwidth. This is a measure of the data transfer rate, measured in “bits” per second (bps) or “kilo-bits” per second (Kbps) or “Bytes” per second (Bps) and so on. Each physical network connection between two points has a maximum bandwidth rating, which cannot be exceeded.
Latency. This is a measure of the “time delay” of transferring data from one point on a network to another point on the network. It is usually measures in milliseconds (ms) or seconds (s).
WAN (Wide Area Network). A network where there is a large distance (or latency) between computers on the network. This is in contrast to a LAN (Local Area Network) where there all machines on the network are “local” in the sense that there is minimal latency between the network points.
The following sections discuss the impact of bandwidth, latency, and WAN on BI components.
