Women business founders rising, but slowly

Where are the Starbucks, Nikes, Amazons, Home Depots and Genentechs founded by women? This is a question that puzzles those who track fast-growing companies. Few fledgling businesses founded by men or women ever grow into giant corporations, but with women launching twice as many businesses as men, some meaningful percentage of the new giants might be expected to have a woman as keystone.

Enterprise Applications On Demand: Performance Made Lean

By Hans Jansen, Chief Technology Officer, QAD Inc.
On-demand software deployment, also referred to as software as a service (SaaS), is the next step in the evolution of enterprise application development. In a very short time, on-demand has evolved from being perceived as a unique way to deliver point solutions, to acceptance as a viable model for deploying and managing mission-critical applications. Indeed, both Gartner Research and AMR Research are projecting growth of SaaS to be twice as fast as the overall enterprise applications market through 2011.

On-Demand ERP Is Here

Enterprise resource planning (ERP) vendors are, says Charlie Eggerding, vice president, automotive, for QAD Inc, “Creating products that are delivered anywhere in the world and that will provide compliance and standardization for the automotive community.” What’s now notable is that user companies no longer need an extensive compute infrastructure. All they need are desktop computers that can run a web browser and that can hop onto the Internet. Sound familiar? Think “application-service-provider-(ASP)-meets-web-portals”. Called “software as a service” (SaaS), in this new approach to ERP software is provided as a utility, priced like a utility, and delivered as a subscription service.

Leaning on Standards

New AIAG standards initiatives are leading the automotive industry closer to the perfect lean market.

Economists theorize that access to the right information at the right time creates conditions for what they call a "perfect" market. The principles of lean manufacturing are being adopted by automotive manufacturers everywhere, and the benefits of practical applications can be seen as companies implement ERP technology to automate business processes across systems, improving operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.

Achieving the "perfect lean market" is more than just speeding up production and slimming down by eliminating waste in the production process. In a perfect lean market, manufacturing data moves through the supply chain unconstrained by geographic, technical or business obstacles; it doesn’t depend on human intervention to get data from one business partner to another. Also, in this same context, access to data by multiple functional domains within the distributed enterprise should be available as needed rather than constrained by standalone systems that support a single functional domain or even single business process.

Supply-Chain Demands

How manufacturers manage their supply chains is becoming so crucial to meeting customer demands that not investing in technology to streamline operations can be the difference between success and failure. Automotive supplier Polytec Holden, www.polytec-holden.com, Hereford, U.K., provides automotive trim panels such as bumpers and spoilers and counts leading names such as Volvo, Mercedes-Benz McLaren, Aston Martin, Jaguar, Bentley, and Ford among its customers. Because these same automakers have pressures put on them by the consumer for more customization of its vehicles, the pressure flows down the supply chain to companies like Polytec Holden.

Beyond Lean: The Perfect Lean Market

By Pamela Lopker, president and chairman of QAD Inc.
Manufacturers continue to make great strides in adoption of lean and just-in-time manufacturing techniques to cut waste and delay from their operations. In working with manufacturers over the past 25 years, I know first-hand that lean manufacturing is serious business. By now, I'd estimate about 80 percent of U.S. and global manufacturers have lean initiatives. Yet less than one percent has lean practices in place. Why? There's still a blind spot in manufacturers' "lean" vision. That blind spot is supply chain communications.
