What is it and what can we do to strengthen supplier relationships, improve demand and supply chain planning, and simplify supplier collaboration?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the Bullwhip Effect?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it\u2019s been around for decades, the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bullwhip_effect\" rel=\"noopener\">bullwhip effect<\/a> has reared its ugly head recently in response to the unprecedented impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic combined with existing weaknesses in the supply chain. It occurs when unexpected upswings in demand or \u201cdemand distortions\u201d are amplified upstream, starting from the consumer, moving to the retailer and distributor and finally to the producer, which may or may not be able to increase production for a demand that may or may not last.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common results of the bullwhip effect are excess inventory and associated cost increases, lost revenue, unnecessary capacity and a less-than-optimal customer experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEconomists have blamed product shortages such as semiconductors and the present spike of inflation, to an extent, on the bullwhip effect,\u201d reports a<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessthink.unsw.edu.au\/articles\/bullwhip-effect-supply-chains-how-to-prevent\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from BusinessThink at the University of New South Wales.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Causes of the Bullwhip Effect<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exacerbated by the pandemic, global supply chain challenges have included manufacturing lockdowns, labor issues across all sectors, transportation challenges ranging from port backups to a lack of truck drivers, and rapid and sudden changes in consumer demand. The bullwhip effect has multiple causes that distort the supply chain, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes in demand forecasting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rounding up or down of the quantity of orders and batches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Price fluctuations and discounts resulting in increased purchases<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quantity rationing or delivering under\/over order quantities<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Economists also point to just-in-time operations as a factor, as described in a<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flexport.com\/blog\/beating-the-bullwhip-effect-can-supply-chain-imbalances-be-fixed\/\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent article<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about supply chain imbalances, from a global logistics provider:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGlobal vulnerability to a bullwhip effect has been years in the making. Decades of just-in-time manufacturing have sought to eliminate as much supply chain inefficiency as possible, by tightly matching replenishment to demand.
