{"id":10549,"date":"2022-11-17T12:08:50","date_gmt":"2022-11-17T20:08:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.qad.com\/blog\/?p=10549"},"modified":"2022-11-21T16:10:39","modified_gmt":"2022-11-22T00:10:39","slug":"contingency-planning-amid-a-potential-rail-strike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.qad.com\/blog\/2022\/11\/contingency-planning-amid-a-potential-rail-strike","title":{"rendered":"Contingency Planning Amid a Potential Rail Strike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=&#8221;10550&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just when manufacturers and distributors thought some semblance of \u201cnormal\u201d might be returning, the possibility of a railroad strike has resurfaced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scenario of a rail strike sheds light on the unsteadiness that has come to define today\u2019s global supply chain, as QAD\u2019s Stephen Dombroski wrote recently in an <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foodlogistics.com\/transportation\/rail-intermodal\/article\/22485200\/qad-inc-how-railroad-strike-sheds-light-on-the-importance-of-contingency-planning\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food Logistics.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consumers may not be aware, but manufacturers and distributors know all too well the immense volume of American manufactured and distributed goods that depend on rail transportation in all vertical industries, from industrial, chemical and high-tech to food and beverage and automotive, among others. Rail transportation is the best choice to move raw materials, ingredients, packaging, work-in-process, finished goods and essential supplies like fuel, solvents and processing chemicals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a recent Bloomberg <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/newsletters\/2022-09-12\/supply-chain-latest-us-railroad-strike-threatens-supply-chain-recovery\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, trains move about 28% of total U.S. freight. Half of that traffic involves bulk commodities \u2014 particularly food, energy, chemicals, metals and wood products \u2014 plus automobiles and industrial parts. The other 50% consists mostly of shipping containers carrying smaller consumer goods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An enormous volume of products hangs in the balance, with wide-ranging ripple effects. It is estimated that a rail strike could cost the U.S. economy up to $2 billion a day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The stakes couldn\u2019t be higher.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transportation-related Supply Chain Challenges Remain<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manufacturers and processors know that the supply chain remains battered and fragile. While responding to supply challenges by adapting to new ways of working, increasing inventories and improving digital and risk management strategies, manufacturers understand the harsh truth:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c\u2026recent events have shown that supply chains remain vulnerable to shocks and disruptions, with many sectors currently wrestling to overcome supply-side shortages and logistics-capacity constraints,\u201d according to an <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/capabilities\/operations\/our-insights\/how-covid-19-is-reshaping-supply-chains\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from McKinsey. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn many sectors, there are signs that the rate of investment in digital supply-chain technologies is slowing down. Talent gaps are wider than ever, end-to-end transparency remains elusive, and progress toward more localized, flexible supply-chain structures has been slower than anticipated.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stephen points out that \u201cThe industry needs to treat the supply chain like it is a living, breathing thing that has a mind of its own. Companies need to anticipate how its moves, twists and turns will impact both short and long-term scenarios for all manufacturing sectors and all regions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An Urgent Need for Contingency Planning\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The specter of a rail strike highlights the critical importance of contingency planning. Anticipating how the supply chain will react to those scenarios is essential.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some logistics and shipping businesses have already prepared contingency plans in the event of a rail strike. Many rail freight providers started over the summer and early fall by moving priority freight such as chlorine and ethanol ahead of common freight, according to a <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/10\/20\/threat-of-rail-strike-has-supply-chain-ramping-up-contingency-plans.html\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from CNBC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Events like a rail strike underline how urgent contingency planning really is. And while many industries are still rebuilding from the effects of the pandemic by re-engineering facilities, improving safety measures, and planning ways to respond to labor shortages, there are steps to take to avoid operational impacts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In our implementation processes, we underscore the importance of contingency planning. They understand the serious nature of contingency planning.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contingency Planning with an S&amp;OP Process<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.qad.com\/data-sheets\/qad-sales-operations-planning\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sales and operations planning (S&amp;OP)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> process guides organizations in strategic planning and execution to include contingency planning.
