{"id":11085,"date":"2023-03-28T09:35:25","date_gmt":"2023-03-28T16:35:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.qad.com\/blog\/?p=11085"},"modified":"2023-03-28T09:37:07","modified_gmt":"2023-03-28T16:37:07","slug":"the-2023-uaw-negotiations-affect-more-than-union-workers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.qad.com\/blog\/2023\/03\/the-2023-uaw-negotiations-affect-more-than-union-workers","title":{"rendered":"The 2023 UAW Negotiations Affect More Than Union Workers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=&#8221;11086&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221;][vc_column_text]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Negotiations between the United Autoworkers (UAW) and the big three automakers \u2014 Chrysler, Ford, and Stellantis (parent company of Chrysler) \u2014 are slated for the end of the year, and it is already causing a stir amongst the auto industry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from the car companies and the roughly <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.labornotes.org\/2022\/12\/biggest-contracts-expiring-2023\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">150,000 union workers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who will be directly affected by the new agreement, the impacts of the negotiations will also ripple down, disrupting suppliers, investors, dealers, and other players in the automotive game.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps more importantly, this agreement will solidify how quickly electrification is taking over the industry, serving as a much-needed wake-up call for anyone still clinging to the internal combustion engine (ICE).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is my prediction for the 2023 UAW and OEM negotiations\u2014what the outcome of the talks will be, how it will impact the <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pauleichenberg.com\/blog\/how-electrification-will-impact-our-workforce\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">future of auto workers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and what it will mean for automotive suppliers and other auto companies this year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Up for Negotiation?<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amidst major corruption claims within the UAW, union workers are voting for new faces to represent their concerns. They are looking for leaders who will not readily concede to the giant automakers and will fight for high wages, better benefits, cost-of-living adjustments, job security, and financial recognition for their contribution to the record profits by OEMs during the coronavirus pandemic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In turn, the automakers will likely push for concessions that loosen their ties to the supply chains dedicated to the engine and transmission so that they can phase out of traditional auto operations (and eliminate large legacy costs\/burden) and shift resources on <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.qad.com\/blog\/2022\/07\/a-golden-opportunity-from-ev-prototype-to-mass-production\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">electric vehicle (EV) production<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These drastically different goals lay the ground for a contentious negotiation and possible union strikes. The OEMs\u2019 strategies to prepare for the outcome will significantly impact suppliers this year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The OEM Strategy: Shed Assets<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traditional auto giants are losing their edge to brands like <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.qad.com\/blog\/2023\/03\/teslas-master-plan-3-and-its-implications-for-the-auto-industry\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tesla<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who aren\u2019t tied down legacy ICE assets and liabilities as the Big Three. To eliminate that advantage and put themselves back on more of a level playing field, GM, Ford, and Stellantis will need to cut legacy costs, which, unfortunately, includes facilities and employees who have built their careers around the engine and transmission supply chain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They will likely approach this by reducing and selling off those assets to major tier 1 suppliers, such as Magna. This will be a major risk for the UAW, as Magna is not a large scale unionized manufacturer and is more likely to push for significant concessions from the Union.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Union\u2019s Rebuttal: Unionizing Battery Cell Plants<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, the UAW isn\u2019t expected to accept these concessions without a trade-off. So, what will they be asking for?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One potential outcome enabling automakers to shed legacy costs related to the ICE supply chain while providing future security for the Union would be unionizing the automaker\u2019s joint-venture battery partnerships.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is likely that union leaders will see the writing on the wall during these negotiations\u2014that the traditional engine is dead\u2014and will meet some of the Big Three\u2019s demands in exchange for access to their battery cell operations and a petition from the automakers to unionize. This could lead to unions within Ford\u2019s JV with Sk Innovations, GM\u2019s JV with LG and Chrysler\u2019s JV with Samsung.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve already seen the unionization of battery cell plants in December of last year, with hourly workers at Ultium Cells LLC, a joint venture owned by General Motors and LG Energy Solution, <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/money\/cars\/general-motors\/2022\/12\/09\/ultium-cells-general-motors-union\/69714394007\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">voting to unionize<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Ohio-based plant. Mary Barra, CEO of GM, has also repeatedly expressed her support of the unions entering the battery cell plants, so this could be a relatively easy win for the UAW.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Negotiations Will Impact the 2023 Supply Chain\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While automakers will want to avoid costly strikes, like the 40-day <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/10\/29\/uaw-strike-cost-gm-about-3point8-billion-for-2019-substantially-higher-than-estimated.html#:~:text=DETROIT%20%E2%80%93%20The%20United%20Auto%20Workers,The%20strike%20lasted%20from%20Sept.\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strike in 2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that cost General Motors around $4 billion, they will also prepare themselves for the possibility if it means winning the agility and flexibility needed to compete in the new electrified auto market.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To prepare for this, the OEMs will likely bolster their supply volume in the first half of the year, boosting stock in the event of union strikes in the second half of the year. Suppliers (longing for a return of healthy production volumes since the production crash due to COVID and chip shortages) will need to remain cautious and strategic throughout 2023. Suppliers should expect an uptick in production now, followed by a slowdown or halt in the year\u2019s second half.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This will also serve as an important reminder for suppliers and other automotive players to begin developing and <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pauleichenberg.com\/blog\/adapt-or-fall-the-three-paths-forward-for-suppliers-in-a-new-automotive-world\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">executing a solid strategy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for approaching electrification if they haven\u2019t done so
