Some cicadas only emerge periodically over extended periods of time. This year two distinct broods of cicadas, the 17-year and 13-year variety, will emerge at the same time for the first time in over 200 years. The transformation of cicadas from multi-year underground nymph stage to adult winged-insect will result in billions of cicadas bursting forth in a cacophonous symphony. Their brief yet spectacular emergence will feel like a transformation. This event, while awe-inspiring, is but a fleeting moment in a repeated life cycle of these fascinating creatures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the last few years the expression Digital Transformation has been used to describe the path for manufacturers from legacy manual processes to a more automated approach. <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.qad.com\/blog\/2022\/10\/digital-transformation-beating-disruption-in-the-cloud\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digital Transformation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> even got a cool two-letter acronym, DX. The term often evoked a concentrated effort that would catapult some aspect of traditional functions or processes into the realm of smart, interconnected capability. Software and service vendors have targeted specific DX projects across the spectrum of manufacturing and the associated supply chain. Like the emergence of the cicadas, a transformation project completion that converted lingering legacy processes into a more modern approach was to be celebrated.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digital Transformation is a Continuous Process<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Too often DX projects were initiated as pilots or isolated projects with declared beginning and end dates. Many envision digital transformation in manufacturing as a singular, monumental event \u2014 a grand unveiling of new technologies and processes that forever alter the landscape of industry. There is no question that progress can be made in sundowning outdated approaches. However, this viewpoint overlooks the reality that true transformation is a continuum, not a discrete event. True digital transformation is not a sudden eruption but rather a gradual, continuous process of adaptation and evolution. Too often the manufacturer is left with an admittedly improved situation, but like the cicadas the vendors and assembled teams claim transformation victory and disappear. Has the transformation resulted in a real change that is both adaptable and resilient? Or will issues linger and the shine on the transformation fade until the next cycle and have to be transformed again?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At each stage of this journey, manufacturers must embrace change and adapt to new ways of thinking and working. Just as the cicada sheds its exoskeleton to reveal its transformed form, so too must organizations shed outdated practices and embrace a culture of agility and innovation. This requires not only investment in technology but also a commitment to upskilling and reskilling the workforce to thrive in an increasingly digital landscape.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike the cicada&#8217;s cyclical emergence, digital transformation in manufacturing is not a repeated adjustment event. It is rather an ongoing process of renewal and reinvention. As technology evolves and market dynamics shift, manufacturers must continuously evaluate and adjust their strategies to stay ahead of the curve.
