And with any reciprocal conversation, after I ask somebody what they do, they often ask what I do. Usually people are satisfied by an answer like, \u201cI work for a software company called QAD, headquartered in Santa Barbara.\u201d But sometimes people will press me, \u201cWhat kind of software?\u201d or \u201cWho are your customers?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As I drill into details of how QAD makes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qad.com\/solutions\/manufacturing-erp\">Enterprise Resource Planning Software (ERP) for global manufacturing companies<\/a>, people ask, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qad.com\/what-is-erp\">\u201cWhat is ERP?\u201d<\/a> So today I\u2019m going to attempt to answer that question once and for all (looking at you, Mom), but I\u2019m not going to answer it with business words and software jargon (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Enterprise_resource_planning\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wikipedia can help you with that<\/a>). Instead I\u2019d like to use an analogy to illustrate that ERP is very relatable because it\u2019s just like something that you should know a fair bit about since you have one: the human organ system.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s worth pausing for two caveats:<\/p>\n<p>First, I will not be able to fully describe ERP and will miss many concepts that are deserving of their own blog posts at a later date \u2014 not to mention their own books. The purpose of this post is to answer the high level question, \u201cWhat is ERP?\u201d through an analogy.<\/p>\n<p>Second, it\u2019s not a perfect analogy, after all what analogy is? This is meant to bring life and a different perspective to two things that you are a part of every day \u2014 whether you are aware of it or not.<\/p>\n<p>Still with me? Great!<\/p>\n<h2>An ERP System is Like an Organ System<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4426\" src=\"https:\/\/www.qad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Your-Bodies-ERP-System.jpg\" alt=\"Your-Bodies-ERP-System\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Your-Bodies-ERP-System.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.qad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Your-Bodies-ERP-System-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>If you think\u00a0back to your anatomy class days or even a more recent trip to the doctor, you\u2019ll recall just how critical your organ system is in your body. It performs many different functions, each with their own goal of maintaining homeostasis within your body. And when each body system is working effectively, at peak efficiency, the person is healthy. But perfection and a perfectly effective person is very difficult to achieve, especially for an extended period of time. We all know that we should eat better and exercise more \u2014 but we can\u2019t all be <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diana_Nyad\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Diana Nyad<\/a>. Peak efficiency and effectiveness is a goal that there is always room to grow on (just like QAD\u2019s vision for our customers: the Effective Enterprise).<\/p>\n<p>Each system in the body is very different, just like ERP. For example, the respiratory system takes in oxygen that is delivered by the circulatory via blood to the muscular system that allows the person to move. Just like an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qad.com\/\">ERP system<\/a> that takes a customer order and delivers it to the demand planner and then to the shop floor for production.<\/p>\n<h2>Business &amp; Body Critical<\/h2>\n<p>None of this would matter if systems didn\u2019t work together: you wouldn\u2019t be alive and your business wouldn\u2019t be functioning. Both systems are critical, one to power you, and one to power your enterprise. And just like when your organ system is working and you are able to do amazing things, so too your ERP running effectively you can create amazing products.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some parallels that I quickly came up with:<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 100%;\" border=\"1;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Organ System<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>ERP System<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Circulatory System<\/td>\n<td>Hardware \/ Cloud<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Blood<\/td>\n<td>Data<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Skin<\/td>\n<td>Security<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Homeostasis<\/td>\n<td>Status Quo<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Exercise<\/td>\n<td>Up to Date System<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Effective Person<\/td>\n<td>Effective Enterprise<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>What other examples do you have for an ERP system and your organ system?
