In a <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/go.qad.com\/NA-US-FY17-NUR-Effective-Enterprise_LS---QAD-Delivers-Agility.html?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_campaign=na-us-ee&amp;utm_content=bp-evil\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent paper by Mint Jutras<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the following most common reasons for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qad.com\/cloud-erp\">ERP system<\/a> customizations were identified:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Custom reports to menus, portals, etc<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ad hoc reports for queries quickly, on the fly and on demand<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">User-defined data fields<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tailored dashboards with drill down capabilities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Personalized portals combining functions for individual roles<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6029\" src=\"https:\/\/www.qad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/All_Charts_QEP-01.png\" alt=\"ERP System Platform Approach\" width=\"700\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/All_Charts_QEP-01.png 900w, https:\/\/www.qad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/All_Charts_QEP-01-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/www.qad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/All_Charts_QEP-01-768x384.png 768w, https:\/\/www.qad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/All_Charts_QEP-01-696x348.png 696w, https:\/\/www.qad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/All_Charts_QEP-01-840x420.png 840w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These customizations tend to fall into three categories: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">getting information into the system<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">getting information out<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supporting unique business process<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All are reasonable and important areas that increase the value of the system. Best practices can help, but they can only get you so far. Attaining greater fit beyond best practices has required ERP customizations. Companies would weigh benefits versus costs and most often begrudgingly customize their systems. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problem with customizations is that ERP customers trade fit tomorrow for fit today. In essence it is like selling their soul to the devil. They create rigidity and lock in, not only the customization but the whole ERP. They make future customizations and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qad.com\/blog\/2021\/07\/erp-upgrade-when-and-how\">ERP upgrades<\/a> much harder, to the point where the ERP becomes too difficult and costly to keep in sync with your business process. At that point it becomes an anchor on your business. ERP should be an enabler not an anchor. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a Mission to Eliminate ERP System Customizations<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a better way.
