Two of the biggest reasons:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Manufacturers are focusing on what&#8217;s strategic. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For manufacturing companies, leveraging your applications and data to run and grow your business is what&#8217;s strategic \u2013 not managing the underlying technology stack. Cloud service providers have both the  <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">resources<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  (infrastructure, people and specialized technical expertise) and the  <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">focus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  to perform better at these important activities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Cloud service providers are earning a reputation for being more secure.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Traditionally, manufacturers have been cautious about moving business-critical applications such as ERP from on-premise implementations to the cloud, based on concerns about data security, data privacy and regulatory compliance. However, sustained investments in these complex areas can be more readily justified by cloud service providers, which can be amortized over a large subscriber base.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Manufacturers Have Valid Concerns<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consistent with the above, virtually all planned growth of application deployments seen in Aberdeen&#8217;s benchmark research favors the use of cloud service providers \u2013 particularly among small and mid-size businesses (SMBs).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More recently, Aberdeen&#8217;s partnership with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bombora.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bombora<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provides additional visibility into the issues currently of highest concern for manufacturers, based on the keywords they are actively searching with. For example, Aberdeen&#8217;s analysis of the search activities of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than 7,700 global manufacturing companies<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, using searches on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ERP<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a baseline reference, yields the following insights (which are also highlighted in the chart below):<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Deployment model:<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qad.com\/cloud-erp\">Cloud ERP<\/a> correlates with the vast majority (over 90%) of ERP search activity<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 a finding which correlates nicely with previous results.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Security:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Manufacturers are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two to three times more likely<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to search specifically on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ERP security<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 a finding which reflects the significant <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">business impact<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of a potential compromise of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">confidential information<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intellectual property<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or from an <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unplanned disruption of critical manufacturing systems<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Compliance:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Manufacturers are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20 to 30 times more likely<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to search specifically on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">compliance<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 a finding which reflects the mind-numbing array of regulatory and industry compliance requirements for data and processes that any given enterprise may need to deal with, including <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PCI DSS, GDPR<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 21 CFR Part 11<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contracts <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">service level agreements <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(intellectual property; client\/business partner data),<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> SOX<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> SSAE18\/SOC 1<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> SSAE18\/SOC 2<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ISO 27001\/27002<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ISO9001<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Privacy Shield<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Cloud Controls Matrix<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Materials Management Operations Guideline\/Logistics Evaluation (MMOG \/ LE)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, among others.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=&#8221;6498&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>Useful Indicators for Manufacturers<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given the manufacturing sector&#8217;s obvious and necessary interest in security and compliance, <\/span><b>certifications<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for many of the standards and processes enumerated above are an important and readily available indicator of a given cloud service provider&#8217;s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">maturity<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">level of commitment<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Simply put, certifications provide manufacturers with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a higher level of assurance<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that key processes related to security, privacy, and compliance for a potential service provider are defined, documented, reviewed and attested to. If you&#8217;re wanting to look at becoming certified by one of the many respected cloud certification providers, you&#8217;ll want to begin researching into the various entry level exams you&#8217;re able to take to receive a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.examtopics.com\/news\/the-top-5-in-demand-cloud-certifications-of-2018\/\">Cloud certification<\/a> for yourself personally, so you&#8217;re able to offer higher levels of assurance when performing cloud processes for any given business or corporation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another potentially useful indicator is the use of <\/span><b>non-intrusive approaches<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to assessing the security posture of a service provider, by identifying vulnerabilities the way an attacker would \u2013 from the outside. The basic idea is that evidence of maturity and attention to detail in these visible matters provide useful insights into how the service provider is likely to operate in other, less visible matters (e.g., see <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitsighttech.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BitSight Technologies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/securityscorecard.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SecurityScorecard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For these simple reasons, Aberdeen&#8217;s view is that any manufacturer that finds themselves asking, &#8220;Can I be confident in moving my business-critical applications and data to the cloud?&#8221; should <\/span><b>make certifications one of their key selection criteria for a cloud service provider<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Do certifications guarantee that there will never be a security-, privacy- or compliance-related issue?
