One of the bigger manufacturing business systems-related news of the past few years was <\/span>SAP\u2019s announcement<\/span><\/a> that it will terminate support for its widely used ECC 6 ERP platform. First announcing that support would end in 2025 and then delaying the end of maintenance support to 2027. Rivals Oracle and Infor, take a similar approach in pressuring customers to migrate off legacy ERP systems to the Oracle cloud platform or Infor CloudSuite, respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n

These situations have <\/span>spurred speculation<\/span> about both software giants\u2019 motives, their commitment to global manufacturing industries, and the fate of their customers\u2019 <\/span>future technology needs<\/span> as their offering for ERP software<\/a> support dwindles. A few of the loudest voices come from large third-party maintenance providers that call into question the viability of these replacement ERP platforms (especially SAP\u2019s S\/4HANA), and offer a warning about the high costs of implementation.<\/span><\/p>\n

But these \u201cBig Maintenance\u201d vendors\u2019 broader complaint is that \u201cBig ERP\u201d vendors like SAP and Oracle built their business models on the ability to \u201clock in\u201d customers, making them forever captive to one proprietary technology.<\/span><\/p>\n

Big ERP vs Big Maintenance<\/span><\/h2>\n

Here\u2019s a sampling of what the large third-party maintenance (\u201cBig Maintenance\u201d) providers have to say:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>(B)usinesses feel that they are being pressured into giving up their existing ERP system and moving on to another, just because the vendor can use this to grow its business. They\u2019re right…but it should be the customer\u2019s choice whether to move\u2026<\/span><\/i>\u201d — Mark Smith, CEO, Support Revolution<\/span><\/p>\n

Big ERP, on the other hand, has shown restraint in the public arena (though the legal arena is another matter). But they have taken their swings at 3P maintenance providers:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Don\u2019t put your software investment at risk with disreputable third-party support vendors…(that) can\u2019t be trusted to ensure your technology investment is fully protected\u2026(C)ustomers can\u2019t take advantage of new technology to drive business innovation and growth.<\/span><\/i>\u201d — Oracle website<\/span><\/p>\n

For manufacturers running older systems, and especially those nearing end-of-life support, this presents a big dilemma. Face the cost, complexity and long implementation of moving to a completely new, unproven Big ERP platform, or hope to maintain obsolete (or soon-to-be-obsolete) technology as long as possible?<\/span><\/p>\n

Who Wins?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Who makes the better case — Big ERP or Big Maintenance? Could they both be right?<\/span><\/p>\n

Well, there\u2019s a big catch to this.<\/span><\/p>\n

If these were the only considerations–cost, complexity, risk versus degraded functionality and security–it would be bad enough. But there\u2019s much more. And the future of your company is at stake.<\/span><\/p>\n

We live in unbelievably rapidly changing times. <\/span>Market pressures<\/span>, <\/span>technological and competitive disruptions<\/span><\/a> and ever-shifting global economic and political landscapes present challenges that cannot be ignored by manufacturers \u201cchained\u201d to Big ERP.<\/span><\/p>\n

To thrive in this disruptive world–to be ready for the oncoming change, to quickly meet the new market demands, to fend off the new competition–you need to be an adaptive enterprise, one that is efficient, agile and resilient.<\/span><\/p>\n

A Third Way: Becoming an Adaptive Enterprise<\/span><\/h2>\n

That\u2019s not going to happen with your Big ERP platform. Big Maintenance is right about that–you\u2019ll be \u201clocked in,\u201d eventually stuck with inflexibility and customizations, unable to adapt. That\u2019s after the millions of dollars and long, torturous implementation.<\/span><\/p>\n

And that\u2019s not going to happen with your Big Maintenance contract. Big ERP is right about that–all that duct tape and chewing gum on aging infrastructure will get you a great-working VHS player for a few years. But what then? Then it might be too late.<\/span><\/p>\n

What neither side will tell you is that there\u2019s a third way. To become an adaptive enterprise, you need an adaptive ERP<\/a>.
