It&#8217;s easy to think nothing ever changes in winemaking, but the reality is very different. Interest in organic production is growing, which requires new certification schemes, labeling requirements differ from country to country, and there are new EU labeling regulations to contend with. In addition, the data that can be gathered <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qad.com\/blog\/2019\/11\/de-bortoli-wines-improves-grape-to-glass-traceability\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from grape to glass<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has grown exponentially.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.undurraga.cl\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vi\u00f1a Undurraga S.A<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a Chilean winemaking business that&#8217;s been in existence well over a century. From 2,500 acres in some of Chile\u2019s best and most productive winemaking regions, they produce 18 million liters of wine each year. Their challenge is to keep adapting to industry changes and constantly evolving customer requirements. As the leadership team sees things, they have to optimize and automate every aspect of the business, which is why they turned to <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.qad.com\/cloud-erp\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cloud-based ERP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from QAD.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manufacturing Challenges<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Winemaking is a seasonal business, so the top priority at Vi\u00f1a Undurraga is to optimize their use of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qad.com\/blog\/2018\/10\/metrics-matter-capacity-utilization-throughput-ratio\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">production capacity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Grapes can only be harvested when they are ready, so capacity management is a particular challenge when Mother Nature is involved in the scheduling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Vi\u00f1a Undurraga exports 70% of their production it&#8217;s important they stay abreast of labeling requirements in each market they serve. And to complicate matters, there&#8217;s an increasing need to operate &#8220;track and trace&#8221; systems for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qad.com\/blog\/2019\/09\/managing-recalls-with-adaptive-erp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">complete traceability<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> throughout the supply chain. The growth of wine counterfeiting further underscores the need to document the provenance of every bottle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resource utilization and cost management were additional concerns. Vi\u00f1a Undurraga endeavors to measure consumption of every ingredient and the performance of every machine, but this cost tracking is only of value once turned into actionable intelligence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These issues are best summed up in a single phrase: management needed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qad.com\/blog\/2019\/12\/real-time-information-increasingly-important-for-manufacturers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">real-time visibility<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into every aspect of their business.
