{"id":9990,"date":"2022-01-27T10:14:28","date_gmt":"2022-01-27T18:14:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.qad.com\/blog\/?p=9990"},"modified":"2025-04-16T11:49:26","modified_gmt":"2025-04-16T18:49:26","slug":"erps-response-to-advances-in-additive-manufacturing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.qad.com\/blog\/2022\/01\/erps-response-to-advances-in-additive-manufacturing","title":{"rendered":"ERP\u2019s Response to Advances in Additive Manufacturing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=&#8221;9991&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221;][vc_column_text]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we think about 3D printing and additive manufacturing (AM), there\u2019s plenty of \u201cgeek talk for even the nerdiest of engineers around topology optimization, powder bed fusion, laser sintering, isotropics, and the latest composite materials,\u201d according to QAD Director of Industrial and High Tech, Glenn Graney in a <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/erpnews.com\/v2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/ERP_22-1.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ERP News<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThe bottom line is that AM is just cool.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve been hearing about the promise of 3D printing ever since<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.historyofinformation.com\/detail.php?id=3864\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chuck Hull built the first 3D printer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the SLA-1, in 1987 using technology he called <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stereolithography<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The very first object he 3D-printed was a small, black eye-wash cup. The promise of 3D printing has come to fruition in the last 20 years as countless industries and manufacturers have adopted 3D design technologies and additive manufacturing processes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Real-life Additive Manufacturing Installation Examples<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples of some intriguing additive manufacturing installations include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2019, the U.S. Army opened<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.industryweek.com\/technology-and-iiot\/emerging-technologies\/article\/22027630\/additive-manufacturing-center-of-excellence-opens-at-army-center\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Center of Excellence for Advanced and Additive Manufacturing at the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rock Island Arsenal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center (RIA-JMTC)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Illinois. The Center is designed to operationalize \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">additive and advanced manufacturing across the materiel enterprise to improve equipment readiness and Warfighter capabilities at the tactical level.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using 3D printing, researchers from the University of Stuttgart built a<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.industryweek.com\/technology-and-iiot\/article\/21974106\/additive-manufacturing-creates-microcamera-that-can-be-injected-with-a-syringe\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three-lens camera<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that fits onto the end of an optical fiber the width of two hairs \u2013 it fits easily <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inside a standard syringe needle<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an advance for healthcare imaging.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some manufacturers in the oil and gas industry use additive manufacturing to create spare parts on site, test new product designs and produce <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">complex prototypes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An article from PWC entitled,<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.com\/us\/en\/industries\/industrial-products\/library\/3d-printing-comes-of-age.html\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3D Printing Comes of Age in U.S. Industrial Manufacturing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that about two thirds of U.S. manufacturers are adopting additive manufacturing technologies, and about half of them are using it for prototyping and final product production. Fewer manufacturers are in the \u201cexperimenting\u201d stage with additive manufacturing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the PWC article, manufacturers surveyed indicated that supply chain disruption, threats to intellectual property protections and quality issues were the top challenges when adopting additive manufacturing technologies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of QAD\u2019s customers have growing additive manufacturing programs in the industrial, automotive and life sciences vertical industries.
