Key IO Subsystem Sizing Notes
In the absence of any estimates, 500 GB is the minimum recommendation and 1 TB is ideal. The final estimate of disk space needs to be based on best-estimates. See points 2 and 3 below.
Use Reference: Estimation of Initial Database Size to estimate order-of-magnitude sizing for new BI databases.
To allow for BI database growth, size the total disk space for 2-5 times the size of the BI database. SeeAllowance for Future Database Growth for details.
Fast disks – 15k SAS disks.
RAID Level spread across multiple disks, recommend six disks minimum.
Need the associated IO controllers to be capable of servicing maximum throughput from each disk or combination of disks in RAID configuration. Ensure that the IO controllers used do not limit transfer rates per disk below the maximum rated physical-disk and RAID transfer rates, as this can act as a bottleneck at high IO demand rates.
