In the dynamic landscape of manufacturing, adaptation is key to staying ahead of the curve. TS Tech, a supplier of seats and interiors, exemplifies this principle through their implementation of MMOG/LE (Materials Management Operations Guideline/Logistics Evaluation). Jeff Baltazar, VP of Manufacturing, and Wendy Horowitz, Corporate MMOG/LE Senior Manager, sat down with us on the Auto Supply Chain Prophets podcast to share TS Tech’s strategies and offer valuable insights for companies aspiring to enhance their operational and supply chain efficiency, meet new customer requirements and embrace change effectively.
Getting Transformation Buy-in From the Executive Team
From the outset, TS Tech recognized the importance of securing executive management commitment—a critical foundation for any transformative endeavor. Jeff emphasized the necessity of aligning the company’s goals with the interests of top management, highlighting the tangible benefits MMOG/LE could offer. This initial consensus paved the way for a collaborative approach towards implementing MMOG/LE.
However, achieving buy-in from the entire team required more than just managerial support. They highlighted the significance of education and communication in fostering understanding and enthusiasm among employees. By explaining the purpose and potential impact of MMOG/LE, TS Tech empowered its workforce to actively participate in the journey towards successful implementation. Wendy indicated, “It’s giving them even more of a voice. We do have a lot of programs where we try to get feedback from our people in the Kaizen activities. However, they’re very excited because this is a program where we can talk to the materials management people that may not always get as much spotlight as the quality folks or other groups. They’re just really fascinated and excited to have their management engaged with them in their day-to-activities.”
TS Tech didn’t rush into implementation but prioritized laying the groundwork through the AIAG Global Implementation MMOG/LE Training course and resource allocation. They underscored the importance of cultivating a culture of continuous improvement, where every team member is equipped with the necessary tools and knowledge to contribute effectively. Wendy stated, “QAD has a program, in large part, that integrates all the MMOG/LE requirements into it. The system can support all those activities we need to do. In addition, we’ve been able to also invest in new modules that relate more directly to the supply chain. But we’re really excited. As people are seeing how they’re going to be able to use these new systems and increase their efficiencies. This is going to help them be even better than they are.”
Taking a Holistic Approach to Supply Chain Management
TS Tech’s commitment to integrating MMOG/LE principles into their ERP system exemplifies their holistic approach to supply chain management. They emphasized the importance of leveraging technology to optimize material flow and minimize redundancies, thereby maximizing operational efficiencies and ultimately impacting the bottom line. Wendy stated, “One of the big tenets of MMOG/LE is to automate. The less Excel sheets and manual processes, the better. So, one of our big pushes is to utilize technology as much as we possibly can.”
Additionally, central to TS Tech’s success was the creation of an internal tool that facilitates implementation monitoring. This tool helps streamline internal responses to the MMOG/LE assessment and provides visibility across TS Tech locations and management before submitting the MMOG/LE assessment to mmogle.com.
Beyond the technical aspects, TS Tech prioritized change management and fostering a culture of collaboration and empowerment. TS Tech’s leadership championed the initiative and engaged with employees at all levels. Through inclusive practices and open communication, TS Tech broke down silos and empowered employees to take ownership of the transformation process.
Peer Insights on Effective Change Management
Reflecting on their journey, Wendy and Jeff offered valuable advice for companies embarking on a similar path. Wendy emphasized the importance of starting early and investing in education and training, recognizing that success takes time and dedication. Jeff urged companies to embrace the challenge of change, emphasizing the potential rewards of operational efficiencies and competitive advantage.
TS Tech’s MMOG/LE journey serves as a compelling case study in effective change management in their journey to achieve operational excellence. By prioritizing executive commitment, employee buy-in, technological innovation, and cultural transformation, TS Tech exemplifies how proactive adaptation can drive tangible business outcomes in today’s fast-paced manufacturing landscape. As industries continue to evolve, the lessons learned from TS Tech’s journey are invaluable for companies seeking to thrive amidst change and uncertainty.
