Frequently Asked Questions
What is LTL shipping?
Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) shipping is a transportation method for shipments that are too large for standard parcel services but do not require a full truckload trailer (TL). LTL shipments typically occupy less than the entire 53-foot semi-truck trailer. For efficient space utilization and damage protection, individual packages within an LTL load are often shrink-wrapped together to form a larger, unified unit before being stacked onto 48” x 40” pallets, into crates, or large boxes. These shipments are then combined with freight from other businesses into a single trailer, depending on the commodity being shipped.
What are accessorial fees?
Beyond the base freight charge, LTL shipping often incurs additional fees known as accessorial charges. These charges compensate the carrier for extra services required to fulfill the shipping contract. Common accessorial services, which contribute to the overall cost, typically include fuel surcharges, time-sensitive delivery fees, and specific charges related to freight handling, pickup, and delivery. Optional services designed for increased security and convenience can also add to the final cost.
